Goal setting: Before it’s too late…welcome to 2017, hope you’ll make it your most awesome year yet!
Every January, the same pattern keeps repeating: we set goals/New Year resolutions only to realise at the end of the year that we haven’t achieved most of it. It can be pretty deflating, wouldn’t you agree? I don’t want to talk about setting your New Year resolutions and how to do x and y, stay on track and all that. Well..not in the traditional sense at least (so she says!)
I don’t know about you, but I definitely agree with Bill Gates when he says “most people overestimate what they can do in one year and underestimate what they can do in ten years”.
And this got me thinking…
How do we actually get to achieve what we truly want every year?
From my experience so far, the key is to make a list with all the stuff you want and select 2-3 which are the most important. I then do my best to execute those well. You can always add more once you’re confident you can achieve those or have already achieved part of it. I used to overwhelm myself a LOT!!! …until I realised I was just trying to fill in a list. It’s almost like going to a buffet meal and you fill your plate with everything in sight. You end up eating only half of it. I mean you’re hungry and want it all but half way through you realise you’ve taken on too much….
It’s the same with goal setting. Think about it…it makes more sense to have less on your ‘plate’ and enjoy that, like a lot! (based on the “Less is more” principle, you get the idea!) Focus on the things you truly want, create a plan and new habits to achieve that. Ask yourself who do you need to become in order to reach a certain goal? And if you need a bit on inspiration or uncertain about it all, my favourite gal, Marie Forleo, has a killer video here that is guaranteed to help you set and ACHIEVE these goals in 2017.
Do you have any goals that you keep re-adding onto your list every year? Do you really want to achieve them or you’re just adding them on because you have to?
My one is swimming. I am not great at it but I keep saying every year that I’ll do it. 2017 is the year when I’ll learn to swim like a pro (well almost!) Last year I tried surfing although I can’t swim well but I figured it’s one way to overcome my fear and … guess what? It worked. (I would lie if I if said I wasn’t scared, I kept thinking I’ll die in Australia lol)
My point is this …whatever you truly want to do, MAKE the time for it this year, it’s always down to YOU!
I’ll ask again: what’s one thing that you really really really want to achieve this year? Is it being more active, eating better, self-care in general, experimenting more with mindfulness, finding the job/career/business that’s making you happy? Spending more time with loved ones? Getting out of your comfort zone more often? Reading more? (Let me know in the comments section below!)
Whatever it is, I just wanted to remind you that YOU are the creator of your own reality and only YOU can make it happen.
Don’t wait up for next year and don’t let fear stop you! Just go after what you want like you mean it, I am sure your future self will thank you for it!
Stay awesome & focus on the good!
P.S. If you’re giving yourself a hard time for not achieving much last year, take a pen and a piece of paper and write down all the things that brought you joy last year: it can be activities, trips with friends or family, courses, networking events, anything that made you happy and helped you grow. You will be surprised how much you actually did! 😉
